How to use a name generator well

The mistake is looking for the perfect name in the first batch. Generators are filters, not oracles — the value is in producing enough candidates that a few survive contact with reality.

Generate broadly, shortlist a dozen, then test each against the three checks that actually matter.

The three checks

Names clearing all three are far rarer than names clearing any one, which is exactly why volume beats deliberation at this stage.

What makes a name work

Availability is not permission. A free domain and a clear Companies House search tell you nothing about whether an existing business has prior rights in the name. Check the trade mark register before you print anything.

Registered name versus trading name

They do not have to match. A company registered as “Beaumont Holdings Ltd” can trade as “Fold”. The registered name still has to appear on your website, invoices and business letters, alongside the company number and registered office — but it does not have to be the name on the door.

That is useful if the name you want is taken at Companies House but free as a trading name and domain, though it does not remove the trade mark question.

Common questions

Is a business name generator any good?

Used as a filter rather than an oracle, yes. Generate a large batch, shortlist a dozen, then test each against Companies House, the trade mark register and domain availability.

Does a free domain mean I can use the name?

No. It means nobody registered that string. A business with prior trade mark rights can still stop you using it.

Can my trading name differ from my registered company name?

Yes. Your registered name must appear on your website, invoices and letters, but you can trade publicly under a different name.

What makes a bad business name?

Names you have to spell after saying them, names that read wrong as one continuous string, over-descriptive names that box you into one place or price, and names following a current naming fashion.
